Geocache Description:

The Center for Outdoor Ethics views geocaching as a fun and worthwhile recreational pursuit when done in accordance with land management agency regulations and with Leave No Trace in mind. As the popularity of geocaching has exploded over the past few years, land managers in many areas are seeing more impacts related to geocaching. However, because of geocaching, more and more people are enjoying the outdoors. As responsible geocachers, we have an obligation to tread gingerly on the land and adhere to the Leave No Trace Principles.

LNT03 - Dispose of Waste Properly

Principle 3: Dispose of Waste Properly:
Proper disposal of waste is important to avoid pollution of water sources, avoid the negative implications of someone else finding it, minimize the possibility of spreading disease, and maximize the rate of decomposition.

Proper waste disposal elements to consider when geocaching:

  • Cache In, Trash Out. Carry an extra trash bag for trash, leftover and dropped food, and litter left by others.
  • Bonus cache hint: C=8.
  • Use established bathrooms when available. If not available, deposit solid human waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from water sources, campsites, trails and caches.
  • Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products in a double plastic bag.
