Geocache Description:

Welcome to Robberg Nature Reserve's archaelogical highlight - Nelson Cave!

This site is too fabulous to not have a geocache placement, so I decided today to add one to the mix at Robberg NR.

It is a middle and stone age site first occupied 120,000 years ago, when the sea level dropped. Grasslands here stretched beyond the southern horizon during the last Ice Age and giant horses, giant buffalo and giant hartebeest antelopes grazed here. They became exrinct about 10,000 years ago. Take a look at the attached photos to see some of the displays and info on the cave.

Park at the indicated parking spot just past park entrance gate, Waypoint 1. The path down to the cave is 240m long and about 40m altitude drop. It can get a bit slippery when wet but otherwise is fairly easy.

There is a very interesting exhibit at the cave itself, solar powered lights and lots of fascinating information.

There will be no cell reception at GZ but you won't need it. Search for the cache (a raw PETling with logbook and pen inside) at the obvious place once you step onto the wooden platform at the cave entrance. You may want to use the pen to sign into Cape Nature's guestbook too - sadly there was neither pen nor info brochures at time of cache placement.

Cape Nature fees apply (R50pp and R30 per child at the time of placement in 2022), unless you have a Wildcard.

Please bring your own pen just in case the one in the cache has found another use.
