 Ruderi della Chiesa di San Bernardo

Storia

L'antica cappella di San Bernardo fu costruita nel XV secolo, ampliata e ristrutturata nel corso del XVIII secolo; si conservano ancora parte dei muri perimetrali e il catinoabsidale. Gli affreschi che decoravano la parete a destra dell'abside sono stati rimossi e sono attualmente conservati presso il Museo Borgogna di Vercelli (Crocifissione, seconda metà del XV secolo) e, a Gattinara, presso la nuova Parrocchiale di San Bernardo (immagini di dolenti ai piedi della croce, XVIII secolo).

Con l'espansione industriale incontrata da Gattinara nella prima metà del Novecento, questo quartiere, da semplice zona campestre, si fece eccezionalmente popoloso, così da rendere opportuni il suo smembramento dalla cura parrocchiale di San Pietro e la fondazione di una nuova parrocchia. Tra il 1975 e il 1977 vennero formalizzati questi due atti, così che nel 1979 venne posata la prima pietra della nuova chiesa, il cui progetto venne affidato all'architetto gattinarese Giuliano Spinelli.

La nuova chiesa di San Bernardo è un buon esempio di funzionalità liturgica inserita in un contesto architettonico moderno: costruita in cemento armato, è a pianta quadrata e dotata di ampie aperture laterali che lasciano penetrare all’interno la luce naturale. Uno snello campanile sormonta i due spioventi della volta, mentre l’inserimento nell’ambiente circostante, zona residenziale, è favorito da una sistemazione su diversi livelli, con l’impiego di gradevoli aree verdi. La casa parrocchiale e i numerosi locali di servizio ricavati sotto la chiesa completano l’insieme architettonico senza dubbio più significativo della Gattinara di oggi.

History

The ancient chapel of San Bernardo was built in the 15th century, enlarged and restructured during the 18th century; part of the perimeter walls and the apsidal basin are still preserved. The frescoes that decorated the wall to the right of the apse have been removed and are currently kept in the Borgogna Museum in Vercelli (Crucifixion, second half of the 15th century) and, in Gattinara, in the new Parish church of San Bernardo (images of mourners at the foot of the cross, 18th century).

With the industrial expansion encountered by Gattinara in the first half of the twentieth century, this district, from a simple rural area, became exceptionally populous, so as to make its dismemberment from the parish care of San Pietro and the foundation of a new parish opportune. Between 1975 and 1977 these two acts were formalized, so that in 1979 the first stone of the new church was laid, the project of which was entrusted to the Gattinara architect Giuliano Spinelli.

The new church of San Bernardo is a good example of liturgical functionality inserted in a modern architectural context: built in reinforced concrete, it has a square plan and has large side openings that allow natural light to penetrate inside. A slender bell tower surmounts the two sloping sides of the vault, while the insertion into the surrounding environment, a residential area, is favored by an arrangement on different levels, with the use of pleasant green areas. The parish house and the numerous service rooms created under the church complete the undoubtedly most significant architectural ensemble of today's Gattinara.
