The square has exploded in size since its construction and opening on September 10, 1979 at a cost of $30 million. I can still recall the centre being built and at the time, we were skateboarding down Gilchrist Drive, and finishing off our run down Kellicar Lane, because at that time, Gilchrist Dive was still not connected to the bridge! We moved into the area in !983, when it was pretty much a single large shopg, and another big building housing many other smaller shops, but also a few larger commercial shops of the era, some of which are no longer around..
As the areas population exploded. it was very obvious that this centre had been outgrown. So a major $160 million expansion was undertaken and completed in 2005 which increased the footprint from 29,000 square metres to 90.000 square metres which made it one of the largest shopping complexes in Australia at the time. With the introduction of the Multi level carparks, exiting and entering the shopping centres could often become a very frustrating experience, then to add to the fray, they later introduced paid parking and boom gates, which on many an occasion lead to parking rage!
You may notice the nearby apartment buildings. These very unassuning structures are somewhat groundbreaking, but looking at them you wouldnt know it, They are actually of fully timber construction in the substructure, and iwas quaite bizarre if not somewhat worrying watching them being built! But they have certainly stood the test of time.....so far!
