Geocache Description:

This is a relatively simple multi-cache created to memorialize Union Colonel Frank Lane Wolford, a Columbia native who was an attorney, orator, statesman, and had a controversial military career.

You will gather information from two virtual stages to obtain coordinates to the final, which is a preform located near the second stage.

Col. Wolford was a renowned criminal defense lawyer, a veteran of the Mexican War (1847), and served in the state House of Representatives, (1847-48 and 1865-66).

During the Civil War, Wolford served as Colonel of the 1st Kentucky Cavalry Regiment, which he helped organize in 1861. (If you complete the Adair County Notables Adventure Lab you will visit a memorial to the 1st Kentucky Calvary, which frequently fought John Hunt Morgan’s Confederate cavalry.)

A vocal opponent of President Abraham Lincoln’s policies, Col. Wolford was ultimately arrested and dishonorably discharged from the service (1864). Although Lincoln intervened and Col. Wolford was released, he continued to speak out and was again arrested. Lincoln eventually intervened for a second time and Col. Wolford was again released in 1865. He would go on to be appointed Adjutant General of the Kentucky militia (1867-68), and was twice elected to the U.S. Congress (1883-87).

Final is located at N37 06.ABC W085 18.DEF

Stage 1: Courthouse Historical Marker

N37 06.162 W085 18.353

At this location, find the historical marker to Col. Wolford and solve for the following:

A = Number of times he was wounded minus the last digit in his year of death.

B = Last digit in the year he was born in Columbia.

C = Last digit of the number that can be found on the bottom right of the marker.

Check Sum = 14

Stage 2: Col. Frank L. Wolford Grave

N37 06.313 W085 18.270

At this location you will find the final resting place for Col. Wolford. Immediately behind his marker is the grave of Samuel Wolford (unknown relationship). Use information on Samuel’s grave marker to solve for the following:

D = Sum when you add together the two digits of his birth month.

E = Day of his death.

F = Determine Samuel’s age on the day he died. Add 1 to the digit on the right.

Check Sum = 11

As with all cemetery caches, please do not hunt this one at night.
