Il padre, nel 1811, era rimasto vedovo della prima moglie Margherita Cagliero, dalla quale aveva avuto due figli: Antonio (1808-1849) e Teresa Maria, morta nel 1810 due giorni dopo la nascita; da Margherita Occhiena, prima di Giovanni, aveva avuto Giuseppe (1813-1862).
Quando Giovanni aveva soltanto due anni, il padre contrasse una grave polmonite che lo condusse alla morte l'11 maggio 1817, a soli 33 anni. Francesco Bosco lasciò così la moglie Margherita vedova con tre figli da accudire (Antonio, Giuseppe e Giovanni), oltre alla madre del marito, Margherita Zucca (1752-1826), anziana e inferma. Furono anni molto difficili per mamma Margherita.

The father, in 1811, was widowed by his first wife Margherita Cagliero, with whom he had two children: Antonio (1808-1849) and Teresa Maria, who died in 1810 two days after birth; from Margherita Occhiena, before Giovanni, he had Giuseppe (1813-1862).
When Giovanni was only two years old, his father contracted severe pneumonia which led to his death on May 11, 1817, at just 33 years old. Francesco Bosco thus left his wife Margherita a widow with three children to look after (Antonio, Giuseppe and Giovanni), as well as her husband's mother, Margherita Zucca (1752-1826), elderly and infirm. They were very difficult years for mother Margherita.

Giovanni Bosco wurde am 16. August 1815 in einem bescheidenen Bauernhaus im hügeligen Weiler I Becchi di Castelnuovo d'Asti (heute Castelnuovo Don Bosco) dort, wo heute die Basilika Don Boscos steht, als Sohn des Bauern Francesco Bosco (1784-1817) geboren und Margherita Occhiena (1788-1856).
Der Vater wurde 1811 von seiner ersten Frau Margherita Cagliero verwitwet, mit der er zwei Kinder hatte: Antonio (1808-1849) und Teresa Maria, die 1810 zwei Tage nach der Geburt starb; von Margherita Occhiena, vor Giovanni, hatte er Giuseppe (1813-1862).
Als Giovanni erst zwei Jahre alt war, erkrankte sein Vater an einer schweren Lungenentzündung, die zu seinem Tod am 11. Mai 1817 im Alter von nur 33 Jahren führte. Francesco Bosco hinterließ seine Frau Margherita als Witwe mit drei Kindern (Antonio, Giuseppe und Giovanni) sowie die alte und gebrechliche Mutter ihres Mannes, Margherita Zucca (1752-1826). Es waren sehr schwierige Jahre für Mutter Margherita.
