Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the given coordinates, read the description carefully to find them.

Introduction

The last few years have seen incredible advances in AI, particularly in the field of natural language processing, with transformer architectures such as BERT and it's many creatively named variants (RoBERTa, ERNIE, BigBird, CamemBERT, ...). Combined with the advances in image processing starting around 2012, one task that predictably improved a lot was the ability to automatically generate natural language descriptions of images, known as captioning.

What was not expected is the ability of machine learning models to do the opposite: to generate an image based on a description of it (also known as a 'prompt'). OpenAI's DALL-E models are perhaps the most successful in this area, although freely available tools such as craiyon are more accessible and improving rapidly.

An important part of the description is asking for a particular style: a photograph, digital image, or even a painting in the style of a particular artist. For this cache, I have used the last ability to ask an AI to create paintings with geocaching related activities, creating literal geo-art!

Mystery Task

For this mystery, you have to identify the artist that is being immitated by AI in each of the pictures. Each picture includes a geocaching-related prompt that was used to generate the image, but without the artist. It is up to you to recognize the artist from the style of the painting.

To make this a bit easier:

  • The images all include an unaltered part of an original painting by that artist.
  • The geochecker linked at the bottom will tell you which answers are correct, so you do not have to get all of them at once.

Example

0. A man setting off on a boat to find a geocache on an island in the style of ...

The dark colours and style here are very recognizable, and the parts around the fire are directly from Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, so the answer is Rembrandt.

Now it's your turn!

1. A woman finding a geocache in a tree in the style of ....

2. A family finding a geocache under a rock in the style of ...

3. A couple geocaching in a valley at dawn in the style of ...

4. A retired Danish man spotting a geocache hidden on the side of a cliff in the style of ...

As you can see, the caches in the paintings appear to be rather well hidden. And it is unclear to me how many Danish men wear togas. Perhaps we need to publish more pictures online for these models to learn about our favourite hobby. :)

The cache

The cache is a standard small size Tupperware container, with a log and materials to paint your name in the log. Please be careful in retrieving and replacing the cache. It is recommended not to rely on the size for challenges, as it is likely to be replaced by a micro if damaged or muggled.
