carp (pl: carp) is an oily freshwater fish from various species of the family Cyprinidae, a very large group of fish native to Europe and Asia. While carp is consumed in many parts of the world, they are generally considered an invasive species in parts of Africa, Australia and most of the United States.

Goldfish are a type of carp and though we may want to not keep our goldfish after they are done being pets, please do not put them in wild waters. They will likely survive and get big, displacing native fish and destroying habitat.

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) and koi are regulated invasive species in Minnesota, which means it is legal to possess, sell, buy, and transport, but it is illegal to release them into the environment. You may not use goldfish as fishing bait in Minnesota.
