QUINTA TAPPA: CASTRO

  • Castello
  • Chiesa dell'Annunziata (costruita probabilmente sulle rovine del tempio greco)

FIFTH STAGE: CASTRO

Already in prehistoric times the coastal caves, in particular the Romanelli and the Zinzulusa, have known the human presence. The birth of a first urban center occurred at the time of the Liburnian-Illyrian and Pelasgic migrations (17th-16th century BC) when from nearby Epirus populations from the Balkan peninsula moved westwards. It was inhabited by the Messapians and the Greeks. In 123 BC it became a Roman colony with the name of Castrum Minervae.

Following the division of the Roman Empire, Castro became a possession of Byzantium and suffered frequent attacks by the Alani and Ostrogoths in 378, by the Vandals in 456, by the Goths in 543, by the Lombards and by the Hungarians. In 682 it was one of the first cities of Salento to be elected as a bishopric by Pope Leo II. With the Norman conquest and the subsequent Swabian domination, it became a thriving commercial center and a secure military stronghold. It was conquered by the Arabs for eleven years who considered it a very important center and in their papers indicated it as Al Qatara (the Castle).

TO VISIT:

  • Castello
  • Chiesa dell'Annunziata (probably built on the ruins of the Greek temple)
