Geocache Description:

Take a stroll in the woods at Plymouth Woods Nature Preserve. This preserve is dog-friendly, but please keep your dogs on a leash. Unleashed dogs are at risk for disturbing the Allegheny Mound Ants that live in the perserve. Let's protect our ecosystem and our dogs by keeping our dogs leashed!

From the Finger Lakes Land Trust's website: As you hike the red trail through the meadow, you undoubtedly will notice the numerous anthills. These are home to the Allegheny Mound Ant, an important part of the preserve’s ecology.  To keep the mounds exposed to full sun, the ants inject formic acid into the base of plants that would otherwise shade the mounds.  These ants make among the largest and most complex mounds of any ant.  A colony can persist for over 100 years.  Allegheny Mound Ants can both sting and bite.  Nevertheless, bears love to eat the larvae and eggs.

This letterbox is the first geocache in the preserve and will take you along the red trail, and you are encouraged to finish the whole loop in this beautiful preserve.

Inside the cache is a stamp that should remain with the cache. It is what makes this cache a letterbox! This cache was placed with permission by the FLLT: Permit #PW-1

The preserve is closed during gun season every year, please do not attempt when the preserve is closed!
