戸畑駅は駅発着のバスが多く、朝夕の通勤時間帯には学生と通勤客でにぎわいます。90年代、駅とその周辺にあった工場跡地が再開発され、駅舎が移転。新駅舎は1999年に大型ショッピングセンターと同時に開業しました。現在は市民会館・福祉会館の『ウェルとばた』に直結で向かうことができます。
駅北側は洞海湾の埋立地で、自由通路を抜けて北に直進すると戸畑渡場へ行き着きます。そこからは、若戸渡船で若松区へ渡ることができます。

Tobata Station has many buses to and from the station and is crowded with students and commuters during the morning and evening commuting hours. In the 1990s, the station and the surrounding area were redeveloped on the site of a former factory, and the station building was relocated. The new station building opened at the same time as a large shopping center in 1999. The station is now directly connected to "Wel Tobata," a civic and welfare center.
To the north of the station is the reclaimed land of Dokai Bay. Passing through the free passageway and going straight north, you will reach the Tobata port. From there, you can cross to Wakamatsu Ward by Wakato ferry.
