Riutulan koulu aloitti virallisesti toimintansa 1915 lastenkodin tiloissa opettajanaan Ida Lehmusvirta (1915-24). Oppilaita oli parisenkymmentä, joista osa asui asuntolassa. Vuotta aikaisemmin lastenkodin puolella oli aloitettu kuukauden kestävät talouskurssit tytöille.
Lastenkodin tilojen käytyä ahtaaksi rakennettiin mäen päälle arkkitehti Hansenin suunnittelema koulurakennus, joka vihittiin käyttöön maaliskuussa 1931. Uuden koulun tiloihin muutti myös talouskoulu, jonka opetusjakso kesti tuolloin jo useita kuukausia.
Koulutoiminta Riutulassa oli ensimmäiset vuosikymmenet itsenäistä ja vasta 1937 koulu luovutettiin Inarin kunnalle. Sotien jälkeen, suurten ikäluokkien tullessa kouluikään, oli taas tarvetta lisätiloille, joten ns. Ylä-Riutulaan nousi uusi koulurakennus. Tammikuussa 1958 asteli kouluun 60 oppilasta kahden opettajansa johdolla. Vanha, Lapin sodalta säästynyt koulurakennus, sai jäädä palvelemaan oppilasasuntolana.
Lastenkodin ja koulun yhteistyö oli tiivistä. Talouskoululaiset opettelivat lastenkodin puolella lastenhoidon, maanviljelyn ja karjanhoidon taitoja. Koululta oppilaat veivät Ala-Riutulan eläimille ruoantähteet ja toivat tullessaan maitoa ja perunoita.
Vuosien kuluessa sekä oppilaat että opettajat vaihtuivat. Parantuneiden kulkuyhteyksien vuoksi asuntola kävi tarpeettomaksi, joten sinne otettiin vuokralaisia. Oppilasmäärät pienenivät vuosien myötä uhkaavasti ja monien vaiheiden jälkeen koulutoiminta Riutulassa lopetettiin vuonna 1996.

The school in Riutula officially began operations in the children’s home in 1915. The teacher was called Ida lehmusvirta (1915-24). There were about 20 students and some of them lived in the dormitory. In addition, one month housekeeping courses for girls had been started a year earlier.
Gradually, the classrooms in the children’s home got too crowded. A new school was built on the top of the hill. It was designed by architect Hansen and opened in March 1931.
The housekeeping school which already offed longer couses lasting several months operated in the same building.
The school in Riutula was autonomic during the first decades until in 1937 the school was given to the municipality of Inari. When the large age groups born at the end of the 1940’s and beginning of the 1950’s reached their school age there was again need for more space in the school. The new school building was ready in January 1958 for 60 students and two teachers. The old school that survived the war of Lapland was turned into a dormitory.
Naturally, the students and teachers changed as the years passed by. However, the school and the the children’s home always cooperated actively. The students of the housekeeping school received training for child care, farming and animal husbandry in the children’s home. The leftovers from the school were taken to the animal’s of the children’s home in exchange for milk and potatoes.
The new road, which was completed in 1963, improved the transportation alot. It eventually meant the school dormitory was not needed anymore and, therefore, it was rented for tenants. The number of students of the school sank over the years until the school was finally closed in 1996.
Today, the area and the buildings are privately owned. Please, don't walk trought the schoolyard.
