Geocache Description:

Welcome to the 2022 Home Run Derby! Every Saturday morning we placed a new cache. After it was published you had roughly a week to find it and select a slugger to represent you in that week's edition of the home run derby.  The number of home runs he hit the following week (starting the Friday after cache publication) was your score.

This is the FINAL week of the series (25 of 25).

PLAY BALL!

  • The first post season professional baseball series began in 1884 when the National League and the American Association faced each other in a series of games at the end of the season to determine an overall champion.
  • Following the collapse of the American Association in 1891, and until 1901 when the American League was formed, no formal championship series was played.
  • In 1903 the National and American Leagues squared off for interleague exhibition games. These series were arranged by the participating clubs.
  • NY Giants manager John McGraw boycotted the 1904 series so no championship seris was played.
  • After that the two teams with the best record from each league played one another for a World Series championship until 1969.
  • At that time each league was divided into two divisions and each division champion played the other in league championship series.  The winner of each series then faced off in the World Series.
  • In 1994, each league was restructured into three divisions, with the three division winners and the newly introduced wild card winner advancing to a best-of-five “divisional” round.  The winners then advanced to the league championship series and those winners faced off in the World Series.
  • In 2012 a second wild card team was added to each league. The two wild card teams played in a one-game playoff with the winner advancing to the Division Series.
  • In the Covid shortened 2020 season the postseason was temporarily expanded to 16 teams.
  • Beginning this year the three division winners and the next best three teams qualify for the playoffs.  The two division winners from each league with the best records receive a “bye” and the next four teams battle it out to advance to the divisional round and then the league championships.
