Geocache Description:

Why are you here:

First Sergeant Oron Shaul (Z'L) was born on December 27, 1993 and served as a combatant in the 13th Battalion of the Golani Brigade. Following increased rocket fire from Gaza into Israel in June 2014, Israel launched Operation "Protective Edge" (Tzuk Eitan in hebrew) against Hamas. The operation began on July 8, 2014 with aerial bombardment, and nine days later, on July 17, IDF ground forces began entering the Gaza Strip with the aim of hitting rockets launch sites, locating combat tunnels leading to Israel, and destroying and damaging the terrorist infrastructure of the Hamas organization in order to protect the citizens of Israel. A Hamas missile hit and destroyed an IDF armored personnel carrier carrying seven soldiers, including Oron Shaul, during the fighting on July 20, 2014. Hamas quickly claimed it had captured Oron Shaul. In the following days, the IDF confirmed that the body of Oron Shaul had not been identified among the dead. There was a great deal of concern over Shaul's fate during the brief period of time during which it was believed that he had been captured. The reason for this is Israelis have historically paid a heavy price for prisoner swaps to regain captive soldiers or remains. eventually Shaul's death was confirmed by Israel on July 25. Israel demanded the return of Shaul's body as well as the body of another missing soldier, Hadar Goldin (Z'L), later in 2014. Hamas demanded the release of prisoners so that the soldiers bodys could be returned to the familys. Within Israel, a heated political debate arose over whether Israel should release convicted Palestinian militants in exchange for Hamas releasing the bodies of the two dead soldiers. Hamas still has the bodies of the soldiers and no solution is in sight at this time.

Oron Shaul's lookout was erected by KKL (JNF) near the place of his birth and upbringing. The lookout offers a breathtaking view of the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee.
