Geocache Description:

Tirau is a small township of under 1000 people in the central North Island whose name means “place of many cabbage trees” in te reo Māori. Located at a major intersection of two state highways, Tirau is an easy and popular stopover for travelers, who often photograph its outdoor corrugated art, from the big pūkeko birds lounging on a roof to a massive praying mantis hovering over a hydroponics store. John and Nancy Drake began the transformation of the town in 1994 with the introduction of the original corrugated iron sheep which was built onto the end of a huge prefabricated barn. Later came the giant dog - bright-eyed and floppy-eared – which has helped earn it the nickname “Corrugated Capital of the World.” Steven Clothier built the structure in 1998 for the local council, which had solicited design ideas from the community, and today he is renowned for his quirky outdoor sculptures.
