Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo from Fajã dos Cubres (on foot or on a 4-wheel
drive) or from Serra do Topo, leaving the car next to the wind farm and walking
along the PR01 trail SJO. It goes down slowly, stopping to cool off in an
inviting waterfall. Slowly, the paradisiacal destination formed from a landslide
is unveiled. The proximity to the sea created a lagoon with poetic contours,

Geomorphology of the Azores
Islands |

The islands of the Azores,
of volcanic nature, present a wide variety of rocks, shapes, structures and
landscapes, which derives in particular from the geotectonic constraints
intrinsic to their position, in the middle of the North Atlantic and at the
triple junction of the Eurasian, North American and Nubia.
The Azorean landscape is characterized by 27
volcanic systems, which include 16 large volcanic structures (e.g. polygenetic
volcanoes, mostly siliceous and with a caldera) and 11 zones of basaltic fissure
volcanism. These volcanic systems comprise a total of around 1750 monogenetic
volcanoes (namely slag/bagacin cones, domes, coulees, surtseian cones, tuff
rings and maars) dispersed either along the flanks and interior of the
depressions implanted on top of the polygenetic volcanoes, or by the volcanic
mountain ranges and fields of scoria cones that constitute those zones of
fissure volcanism. |

1) a Oeste, uma zona de relevo acidentado, de vulcanismo recente e com cones vulcânicos bem preservados, responsáveis pela emissão de inúmeras escoadas lávicas que originaram frequentemente fajãs lávicas na base das falésias costeiras;

The island of São Jorge
presents itself as an extensive volcanic mountain range of basaltic nature s.l.,
with about 54 km in length and general orientation WNW-ESE, which is
characterized, from the morpho-volcanic point of view, by two distinct regions:
1) to the west, an area of
rugged relief, of recent volcanism and with well-preserved volcanic cones,
responsible for the emission of countless lava flows that often originated lava
fajãs at the base of the coastal cliffs;
2) the eastern zone, older,
with a smoother morphology, a more evolved and well-fitted drainage network and
frequent detrital fajãs at the base of the
cliffs, which portray a longer action of erosive processes and alteration of
volcanic materials.
Despite the basaltic nature
of its geological formations, the island of São Jorge shows an important
multiplicity of landscapes, structures and volcanic products, which constitute
important ex-libris of the Azorean landscape and are an integral part of the
Jorgense experience. As examples of the geodiversity of the island of São Jorge,
special mention should be made of the volcano-tectonic alignments of monogenetic
cones, the imposing coastal cliffs of the island and its fajãs. |

The deformation that occurs
in rocks and that results from the arching of rock layers, initially flat, with
ductile behavior, by the action of compressive stresses. These deformations can
be macro or microscopic. Folds form
within the crust or mantle slowly and gradually, emerging to the surface due to
tectonic movements and erosion. |

|
|
The bending elements, which
characterize its geometry: |
|
- os flancos, ou vertentes da dobra, porções de menor curvatura;
- a charneira, que corresponde à zona de convergência das camadas de cada flanco, ou seja, a linha que une os pontos de máxima curvatura de uma dobra;
- o núcleo, formado pelas camadas mais internas da dobra;
|
|
- the flanks, or slopes of
the fold, portions of lesser curvature;
- the hinge, which corresponds to the
convergence zone of the layers of each flank, that is, the line that joins the
points of maximum curvature of a fold;
- the core, formed by the innermost layers of
the fold;
- the axial plane or surface, the plane
containing the hinges of the different folded layers, dividing the fold into two
substantially equal flanks:
- the fold axis, which corresponds to the
intersection point of the axial plane with the hinge. |

Classification of rocks: |
Quanto a sua disposição espacial: |
|
As for its spatial
arrangement: |
|
|
According to the spatial arrangement of the
folds, these can be called: -
Anti-shape folds, with concavity facing downwards
- Symform folds, with concavity facing
upwards
- Neutral folds, whose opening is oriented
laterally (with vertical axis). |
|
|
|
Quanto a sua Idade: |
|
As for your age: |
|
|
- Anticlinal rocks, when the oldest rocks are found in the core of the antiform
- Syncline rocks, when the most recent rocks are located in the core of the
synform. |
|
|
|
Quanto a sua simetria: |
|
As for its symmetry: |
- Isopacas, quando mantêm a espessura dos estratos
- Anisopacas se os estratos se encontram deformado.
|
|
- Isopacas, when they maintain the thickness of
the strata - Anisopaque if the strata
are deformed. |
|
O Comportamento da deformação: |
|
The Deformation Behavior: |
|
|
- Ductile Regime - Rocks subjected to high
temperatures and pressure tend to bend without fracturing.
- Fragile Regime - Rocks subjected to low
temperatures and pressure tend to fracture, resulting in faults. |

|
|
Among the folded structures, it is common to
distinguish formations, caused by erosion, which can be called:
- Domas, in which the central part is occupied
by the oldest strata
- Basins or cuvettes, in which the central
part is occupied by the most recent layers. |

|
|
In a fold, the position of rock layers in space
can be defined by the direction and slope of the layers.
The layer direction is given by the angle formed
by the directrix (defined by the intersection of the layer plane with the
horizontal plane) with the geographic N-S direction given by the compass.
The inclination of the strata, corresponding
to the angle formed by the slope (line with the greatest slope) with the
horizontal plane, is determined with clinometers. |

|
|
Orogeny (from
the Greek: Oros, mountain; and genesis, formation) or orogeny is the set of
processes that lead to the formation or rejuvenation of mountains or mountain
ranges produced mainly by diastrophism (folding, faults or a combination of the
two), that is, by the compressive deformation of the continental lithosphere.
Orogeny occurs when tectonic plates collide and
results in the formation of folds, mountain ranges or trenches. Its area of
operation is marked by the frequent occurrence of earthquakes and the abundant
presence of volcanoes. |
|
|
When the folds
date from a recent geological era (Cenozoic Era) such as the Andes, they are
considered modern, and when they date from an ancient geological era
(pre-Cambrian, for example) such as the Guiana Shield, they are considered
shields or massifs old. |
|
|
|
Trenches, in turn, are recent
formations, dating from the Cenozoic, for example the Mariana Trench. They are
formed when, in the collision, one plate moves under the other, creating what is
usually called the Subduction Zone or Benioff Zone.
They are characterized by
representing the deepest areas of the planet, for being in direct contact with
the asthenosphere and for their great tectonic instability. |

|
|
Rocks subjected to conditions
of different pressures and temperatures can undergo deformation, a deformation
that affects the shape and/or volume of the rock, giving rise to the appearance
of faults and folds. |

|
|
The stress state applied to
the rocks shows that the rocks present three types of behavior: elastic, plastic
and brittle.
- Elastic behavior the rock
deforms but, when the tension ceases, the rock returns to its initial
shape/volume.
- Plastic behavior – it is
permanent, the material is deformed but does not break and it occurs when the
force applied to the rock is greater than its elastic limit and lower than its
plasticity limit.
- Brittle behavior – the
material fractures. It occurs when the force applied to the rock is greater than
its plasticity limit. |
