It's time for the AGM of GoSA and we were hunting for a place to host a physical AGM. I recalled I have friends in my previous apartment block and figured it would be cool to offer Geocachers a rare opportunity to catch the sights from the 51st floor. While the AGM will take place at 14h00, I've provided for an hour of social engagement before and after. Hence the event beginning at 13h00.
To speak to the obvious security issues many may have; I had lived in Ponte for 3 years between 2015 and 2017 and it was one of the best times of my life. Getting to Ponte is relatively simple without trekking through Hillbrow as you would merely need to go down Jo Slovo, turn into Abel Street and then a quick left into Lily which should lead you directly to the building.
We will be hosted by friends from the organisation Dlala Nje, who for 10 years have been hosting events on the 51st floor and conducting inner city walking tours through Hillbrow and Yeoville among others.
Once you arrive at the building, simply tell the security that you are coming to 5101, park on level 4 (secured and patrolled parking) and climb the stairs to the lobby through the core. You may also arrive earlier should you wish to climb down to level 1 and take your own iconic shot from the core looking up. From the lobby, take one of the 8 elevators to the 51st floor and come to apartment 5101.
Our hosts will have a cash bar available though no purchase is necessary and any purchase will be for your own account.
Naturally, one should take the basic precautions of not leaving phones on seats etc when driving as one would anywhere in Gauteng but otherwise the security is tight and people really friendly. Those who are unable to handle the stairs can contact me to arrange a friendlier way up.
You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions and encouraged to look at the website linked above.
