Based on information obtained from the Carrizozo Outlook Newspaper, this was a small community in southern New Mexico in the early 1900s which was officially designated Oscuro in 1901. By 1910 it had a post office, a school, a store, a hotel, a telephone line and a saloon. In 1920 the school was still open. All that remains of the original town site are the foundations of several of the buildings. The presence of old corrals nearby indicates ranching in the area. Not much more is known about this piece of New Mexico history. While there are a couple of houses in the area, the cache is located in the ruins of the original town site on the east side of the highway and railroad tracks. As always in the desert, be cautious about things that will stick or bite.
