Geocache Description:

I was born and grew up in Binghamton.  One of my brothers still lives here and by coincidence he also enjoys Geocaching. I stop out this way once or twice a year to go caching with him.  On this trip I decided to place a few caches to give you some more to hunt for.

This is part of a series of 4 caches placed in the Waterman Center - Brick Pond location (with permission).  The Waterman Center consists of 6 separate locations throughout the area. They are:

  • Waterman Interpretive Center (main site on Hilton Rd. in Apalachin)
  • Hiawatha Island (Marshland Rd. in Apalachin)
  • Brick Pond (East Front St. in Owego)
  • Apalachin Marsh (Rte. 434 in Apalacin)
  • IBM Glen (Robinson Hill Rd in Endicott)
  • Pettus Hill Nature Preserve (Abby Rd in Windsor)

Information about each site is available at watermancenter.org

This particular set of caches is located along the Brick Pond trails. The trails are open from dawn to dusk daily.  PLEASE - FOLLOW THE RULES. NO NIGHT CACHING!!  I do not think that hunting is allowed, but you might want to wear orange during hunting seasons just to be sure.

Brick Pond is a wetland preserve made up of 30 acres of open water with emergent plants and a wet woods around it.  There is a trail around the area. The Hollenbeck Creek flows into Brick Pond from the east end, then flows through a culvert at the western end into the Susquehanna River. In addition to the creek the pond is also fed by runoff from the surrounding area and by groundwater.

This is a great area for observing wildlife.  There are beavers in the area that can be seen at various locations along the trail.  However, it is best known as one of the best birding sites in the state. Warblers and other songbirds are plentiful along with a variety of waterfowl. Overall there have been sightings of over 170 different species of birds at this location. There are 4 observation platforms along the trail.

THIS CACHE:

This cache is a plastic ammo can.  This one is hidden near the trail, but you may have to do a little bit of bushwacking to get to it.  If you find your self heading into questionable areas you are doing something wrong. Please make sure that the container is not visible when you replace it.  If you find that the coordinates are off do not hesitate to add alternate coordinates in your log.  Do not mention any information about the actual hide.

Have fun and good luck!!
