Geocache Description:

Located in Panther State Forest near the WV/KY/VA border. A nice quiet park to explore. $10 camping, a swimming pool, several picnic areas, a group camp, hunting, fishing, and miles of trails are available. Not the best roads, but I think a geocacher can handle that.

Panther State Forest. The park that required us to place a cache.

Horton Hears a Panther is located in Panther State Forest. I learned of this forest when I uploaded a waypoint to the Tim Horton's Location Project. I accidentally entered the wrong coordinates. The coordinates I entered were one degree south of the Tim Horton's in St. Albans, just outside of Panther State Forest. The name fascinated us, so we thought about placing a cache here. Then we had three Travel Bugs that needed a home cache. With the Bungee Cats, we knew we had to hide the cache here.

It turned out to be an interesting park. Not much like Kanawha State Forest. There are many trails and unimproved roads to walk on. The main road through the park also could use improving. The trails are nice. A little rough at times, but they're wide and easy to follow.

We parked at N 37°25.666' W081°51.680'. I believe there are several nearby trails you can take to the cache.

It was wonderfully quiet during our visit here. Just a few cars going down the road, and a couple hunters in the distance. We never saw anyone else while we were on the trail. We did spot some wildlife, though. We saw a frog hop across the road on the way there, and along the trail, we heard woodpeckers, saw chipmunks, squirrels, and a small snake on the trail. We also saw some bees in the town of Panther that seemed to think we needed pollinating (no stings.)

This cache is fairly tightly packed. Once the Bungee Cats start their travels, I'm sure there will be plenty of room for trade items. You don't need to leave anything in place of the travel bugs (just help them on their way.)

Since this cache is pretty far from just about anything else, we thought it'd be interesting to have people post pictures of their trips to find this cache. We'd love to see pictures from your hike--especially if you keep exploring after finding the cache. Also, any pictures you took on the way to or from the cache would be interesting as well. There were some nice sights along our trip as well.

If you find our coordinates are off for this cache, please post your readings in your log. I didn't have the best accuracy when I took my readings.

Directions from the Panther State Forest brochure: From Route 52, one mile north of Iaeger, turn at forest sign to Panther. At the Panther Post Office, turn left at sign and follow road approximately 3.5 miles to forest entrance. These directions worked well for us, but you have to watch for those signs. One of the signs is missing along the road, but you can see the posts where it used to be.
