Geocache Description:

From this vantage point you could have witnessed one of the naval theatres of the English Civil War (1642-51). Sir George Ayscue commanded a naval blockade of the island of Barbados from his ship, the "Rainebowe" in Oistins Bay from October 1651 to January 1652. Ayscue's naval forces were sent to subdue local Royalists led by Governor Lord Willoughby.

The stalemate ended in a treaty between Royalist and Parlamentarian factions after the final conflict in Oistins. The Charter of Barbados was signed on 11 January 1652 at the Mermaid Tavern in Oistins. It guaranteed Barbadian colonists their rights to land, local control of taxation, liberty of conscience, access to the courts of law and limited free trade.

After joining the ill-fated West Indies Federation (1958–62), Barbados became an independent state and Commonwealth realm - with Elizabeth II as Queen of Barbados - on November 30th, 1966. In 2021, the country transitioned to a republic within the Commonwealth.

Make sure to enjoy the view from this Freights Bay vantage point once you have found the cache nearby, and imagine the naval theatre that took place hundreds of years ago. Nowadays, it's crowded with surfers on a good surfing day. Nevertheless, you might just spot a giant sea turtle (or a few!) swimming leisurely at this wonderful bay located in Enterprise, near Oistins.
