Geocache Description:

11 February 2023, 08:30 - 09:00

Won't you join us on the scenic grounds of Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill for a winter trail mix? There are no requirements to hike here to attend the event, but the numerous caches will be redone on the trails and in the village area.

We are dedicating this winter trail mix to DarkSky1, who tragically passed away recently. He was passionate about geocaching and was the #1 cache hider in Indiana. Robert will be sorely missed from all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Shaker Village was settled in 1805 by Shaker missionaries and drew a number of religious converts during the Kentucky Revivals of the time. The community lasted just over 100 years when the Shaker society was dissolved in 1910. The Shakers left its imprint on the area nonetheless. Over the past sixty years, many original buildings have been restored and now Shaker Village is listed on the National Historic Landmark. Its 3,000 acres make it the largest restored Shaker community in America.

The event takes advantage of the 3,000 acres surrounding the restored village that are crossed by many beautiful trails that are open to bikes, hiking, horses riders and carriage drivers. Cyclists are welcome, but the trails are not specifically maintained for mountain biking. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trails except those involved in trail maintenance.

The trails wind through pasture land being converted to wild flower restoration and through forests that are interspersed with creeks. Awe inspiring rock formations, known as palisades, are clearly visible along many of the trails. Since you will cross water several times some type of waterproof shoes or boots are suggested.

You can just attend the event and not hike on the trails. Hiking is optional after the event. There will be plenty of new permanent hides placed before the event. We will have some breakfast items available in addition to hot coffee and hot cocoa.

There is also a CITO event (GCA41VR) scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 12 for a clean-up along the trail to Shaker Landing. There will be 8-9 new caches to be published along this route!
