Unless downed trees, logs, or stumps pose a danger to park visitors, park staff leave them as they are an imporant part of a forest ecosystem. As dead wood decomposes, it returns vital nutrients to the soil. Decaying wood can provide habitat for many species of wildlife including invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. It also provides lots of places to hide tupperware in the woods!
