History: The Comanche culture allowed marriage to multiple wives. Quanah had up to seven wives at one time. The Commissioner Of Indian Affairs approached him about the matter and told him he would have to obey the laws of the United States and downgrade to one wife. Quanah’s response was “You tell um.” The matter remained unresolved.
