Geocache Description:

[EST] Eesti Jaakobitee aardeseeria viib avastama palverännuteed Tallinna Toomkirikust Iklani Läti piiril.

Eesti Jaakobitee ehk Camino Estonia (250 km) on osa rahvusvahelisest palverännuteest, mis viib Santiago de Compostela katedraali Loode-Hispaanias, kuhu legendi järgi on maetud Jeesuse jünger, Jaakobus Vanem. Palverännutee kulgeb ühest kihelkonnakirikust teiseni. Just nende ümbrusesse geoaarded peidetud ongi.

Vigala Maarja kirik on kihelkonnakirik, kus toimetab Vigala Maarja kogudus.

Nõukogude võimu hävitustöö eest päästmiseks kaeti kirikuõpetaja Ferdinand Jürgensoni korraldusel 1944. a. sügisel mälestustahvlid paksu lubimördiga ja Vabadusristi kujutis plekiga.

[ENG] The Camino Estonia cache series takes you to discover the pilgrimage routes from Tallinn Cathedral to Ikla on the Latvian border.

The Camino Estonia (250 km) is an international pilgrimage route in Estonia, which leads to Santiago de Compostela. It goes from landmark to landmark, from one parish church to another and the surroundings of these churches have hidden some caches.

Vigala St. Mary's Church is a parish church. The church was mentioned for the first time by the priest Johannes from Vigala, the year was 1339. However, a stone gravestone dated 1390-1400 has been preserved on the floor of the sacristy. According to this, the sanctuary existed at the end of the 14th century at the latest.

Completed in 1933, the 45-meter-high church tower also serves as a memorial to the local men who died in 1905 in the peasant uprisings, the First World War, and the War of Independence.

In the autumn of 1944, on the orders of the parish priest, Ferdinand Jürgenson the memorial plaques were covered with thick lime mortar and the image of the Cross of Freedom with sheet metal. in 1950 the sculptures were taken down and buried in the ground next to the tower.

In May 1988, Vigala surprised the whole of Estonia by being the first to restore its own War of Independence monument.

In any case, it is worth taking a moment to sit on a bench in front of the church and admire the unique church façade.

If you're planning to go in and search the cache on Sunday, the service starts at 11 am, and you'll have a chance to see the church from the inside.
