Geocache Description:

First, this cache is in an urban area.  Although it is mostly industrial.  You need to decide if you feel comfortable visiting here.  I do, that's one of the reasons I placed it here.

Parking is allowed on E. 49th street.  The entrance to the park, and a larger parking area, are at the cache coordinates.

Near where you are standing was the original shoreline of Lake Erie.  The slope went down to the water.  All the land before you now toward the lake is fill.  I can only guess what material was used; trash, demolition material, dredgings from the Cuyahoga River.   I have included several screen shots of old maps showing the original shoreline, and how it progressed into the early 20th Century.

I've been to this park several times.  I wonder what it looked like when it was first turned into a park. There is an amphitheater and a stage. Several stone stairs lead from the higher to lower elevation.  There is also an interesting statue here. (See the waypoint.) It is a tribute to those serving in WW 2 who came from the neighborhood nearby, Ward 10.  It was dedicated in September, 1944.  At that time the war was still being fought.  In the Pacific, Marines landed on the island of Peleliu, begining a two month battle.  In Europe, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest began.  And "the folks back home" placed this statue.

Use your imagination and travel back in time.

Congratulations to Shell Leavers, FTF!
