This season each event is part of an alpha series of titles highlighting a term used in Geocaching.

Today’s terms is “Hucklebuck!” A verbal term used to alert other cachers that you’ve spotted the cache…

Not to be confused with “Huckleberry” a very delicious wild berry that grows in the mountains in Washington State…but we’ll talk about that later.

If you Google definitions for Hucklebuck, you’ll get answers that range from a cool-aide like frozen treat popular in Georgia and Louisiana, a song by Chubby Checker in 1949, rhythmic dance from the time just prior to Rock n Roll, an American card game popular in Nebraska and Iowa etc., etc., etc…

I started Geocaching in November of 2004 with a co-worker whose Geocaching name is Scrudder (Which is his last name.) He introduced me to this term as a means to let me know he had spotted the cache but not to alert any nearby Muggles that something might be going on…all these years, I thought Randy had made up the term.

I spoke to Randy today and asked him if he made it up… He got the term from another Geocacher, caveman2040, who started Geocaching in August, 2003 and is still active today. That brings me full circle to the Huckleberry I mentioned above…

Geocaching began in Oregon, very near to Mount Adams, a popular place to go huckleberry picking, so, just maybe it’s a play on words.

So, next time you’re with someone and you’re searching for the cache, instead of hollering, “I see it!!!” or “I found it!!!” you might just say “HUCKLEBUCK”.
