Not scared of a long walk, rain, sandflys, surprisingly deep creeks and you can plan and execute a multi day tramp in remote country?
This a really neat well looked after hut in a fairly remote place.
To get here you will need to expend lots of effort or lots of money.
It is not for the inexperianced or those who are used to only great walks grade tracks.
There are hills, mud, rain, dodgy river crossings and sandflys to contend with, and places things could go really bad if you make a wrong decision
There is are are no formal tracks to this hut that is about 3hrs from the South Coast track, and maybee 12 from the Poteriteri hut. There are many stories of campouts on that leg.
There are some stoat trap lines that can help you get here, others that could hinder you and there is a very strategic bridge nearby that could be useful or a red herring..
Classicly you would tramp from the Hump ridge track carpark, and all going well you would take about 3-4 days each way.
Into the mix you can add packrafting, private jet boat or use one of the comercial jetboat operators that ply the Wairaurahuri river to shorten the foot journey a little, or you could of course engage a helicopter and fly in.
(A private jetboat mission would be a real biggy as access to the Waitutu river is via the sea)
This is a cache you will have to research yourselves and plan accordingly.
