This season each event is part of an alpha series of titles highlighting a term used in Geocaching. Today’s event is brought to you by the letter “I” for Inventory.
Inventory – The list of trackables in a Geocacher’s possession that are moved from cache to cache. This list is visible to other cachers.
A trackable has either a ‘dog tag’ with an identification code, or the code is imprinted on the face, back or edge of the item.
When obtained, the owner must activate the item through Geocaching.com’s trackable option so the item can be tracked.
The owner has three options for how they use their trackables:
Private Collection – take to events and let other Geocachers ‘discover’ them.
Release into the Wilds – place their trackable into a Geocache container with a mission so others can discover or move it along on its mission. Some trackable owners, especially if the trackable is a Geocoin, opt to release a likeness of the actual coin.
Share – gift or trade it to another Geocacher, or place in a NEW Geocache as a First to Find prize – If prior to activation, the new owner can activate it. If it’s already been activated, the current owner can offer it up for ‘adoption’ to the new owner who only has to accept the adoption invite to transfer ownership. (Geocaches can be adopted out in a similar manner.)
Other Geocachers may “discover” or “retrieve” a trackable from an event or a Geocache. When retrieving, log it and be sure to place it in another Geocache asap to keep it moving, or keep the owner notified of where the trackable is currently located or what it’s doing by posting new logs. It’s nice to post pictures of the trackables activates too.
