The following journal entries were found in a patriot spy's diary, who was connected to General Washington and died prior to the end of the revolution. There are several anomalies that indicate they may have known the location of a treasure hoard kept for financing the war in the days following the declaration.
June 26, 1778 – I hear tell that Washington has directed Lafayette to move to Englishtown to receive countenance and support in case of attack. This would certainly alter the misfortunes that have befallen our troops. I am grieved by the notion that they will not obtain the needed support to avoid further hazards.
July 29, 1778 – a powerful French naval squadron sailed confidently to the entrance of Narragansett Bay. Its appearance commenced the first joint French and American campaign in the war to this day. Greene, Lafayette, and Washington steadfastly work to ensure that the alliance will remain intact. They plan to appoint a new commander immediately, knowing that the next joint operation could well succeed to overthrow the English oppression.
