The urban villages in Nangang have been demolished en masse over the last decade, with the pace picking up in the last few years. Though they offer a surprising number of advantages for urban living, the quality of the housing stock in the urban villages was poor and the main point is not to bemoan their loss but to question what comes next. (Still, wandering around the many semi-demolished urban villages in the area and coming across mundane items from childrens shoes to makeshift shrines it's impossible to avoid reflecting on what has been lost.) In Nangang the 'what comes next' phase is still taking shape but already evident are many high quality public spaces, walkways and bikeways set along and around the Ecological Belts starting at the canals and - in their best exemplars - radiating and connecting into the surrounding communities.
This newly built and attractively landscaped garden and building complex with sluice gates is still (as of early 2023) being fitted with a connecting bridge across the canal to the north. As of late December 2022 it is open to the public to wander around, and is especially popular on weekends. There's even a bus route terminating at the entrance.
