A kilometre to the southwest the ecological belt / bikeway winds past flocks of chickens and a few remaining nailed-on agriculture-oriented holdouts to the urban reconstruction of Nangang before passing stacks of shipping containers and a new bridge (still under construction in December 2022 and only partially open to traffic).
The most important aspect of any bikeway is continuity, and in this the ecological belt delivers with an unobstructed blue paving leading ever onward. Yet the ecological belt is more than just a walkway or bikeway along a canal, and in this aspect is an improvement on earlier iteratiions of a similar concept. The ecological belt includes many landscaping elements such as the kind of viewing platform where this cache resides, as well linkages to the industrial heritage of the area. As for the now emptied-out urban villages which housed legions of migrant workers: it remains to be seem what if any vestiges will remain a few years from now.
It's hard to see the former urban villagers moving into the new highrises sprouting up in their place as they generally don't have the kind of ownership right that would form the basis for a compensation or resettlement claim. So where have they all gone? Scattered by the winds to the four directions is the most likely explanation, with many heading back to their home provinces or further afield.
A few children still play in the shadows of the building husks of the urban villages that remain (the structures are mostly still standing but all glass, furniture, and fittings have been stripped), but these are surely the last to grow up among the myriad dense alleyways of the urban villages of Nangang.
