Geocache Description:

4-Stage Multi-Cache in the Whispering Ridge area of Scripps Ranch.

**UPDATED NOV 30, 2003** This cache was originally placed to memorialize the June 2002 fire that burnt only a canyon in Scripps Ranch before it was put out. Like deju-vu all over again, this cache was eerily prescient of the October 26, 2003 Cedar Creek fire that destroyed 300+ homes in Scripps Ranch, including our own. The original cache was destroyed and has been replaced with a new container and swag. The waypoints will take you through the Scripps neighborhood that was worst hit by the fire. Do this one in conjunction with Scripps View and you will also see Pinecastle Street, the "poster child" of this fire and the street our house is (was/will be) on.

The original cache description follows:

This is our first attempt at hiding a cache. I hope you like it.

This is a 4-step multi-cache that takes you on a tour of the June 28, 2002 brushfire in the Whispering Ridge area of Scripps Ranch. The beginning coordinates take you to a location where you can look down into the canyon where the flames were visible. The second waypoint is the location where news crews interviewed residents as the CDF planes swooped down from overhead and dropped flame retardant on the fire. From here you have a different perspective looking down on the canyon. The third waypoint is the head of a trail that takes you through the canyon where the fire raged. This trailhead is probably as close as the fire came to houses in the area. The first three waypoints are best done by car and the last waypoint is a short hike, but you can easily walk or bike the entire route which is about 2-miles. The actual cache is hidden near the base of a tree close to an interesting rock formation, but make sure you find the right tree! Happy Hunting!

Beginning coordinates: N32º54.363’ W117º04.115’
At this location, you will be looking down on houses that were threatened by the fire. The flames were clearly visible from this location. Turn around and look across the street. You will see a "Fairbrook" street sign with a 5-digit number. The second digit is X in the following waypoint:

Second Waypoint: N32º54.5X1’ W117º03.9X2’
At this location, news crews interviewed local residents as the CDF planes swooped down just above the treetops and dropped flame retardant on the fire. You can look down the canyon where the fire was raging. From this vantage point, turn to the left and find the address for the first house you see. The third digit in this address is X and the first digit minus the fifth digit is Y in the following waypoint:

Third Waypoint: N32º54.55X’ W117º04.36Y’
Note that the elevation of this waypoint is 100 feet below that of the Second Waypoint and the streets that take you here are not particularly straight. At this location, you are at the head of the trail that leads into the canyon where the fire was raging. Incidentally, this trail takes you very close to one of the waypoints in the Mustang Sally Multi-Cache. To find the final coordinates, look for a two-digit number posted on a tree at the entrance to the trail. The sum of the digits is X in the following waypoint:

Fourth and Final Waypoint: N32º54.500’ W117º04.4X5’
As you proceed down the trail, you will be able to observe the fire damage. As you approach the coordinates for the cache, you will see a strange rock formation. The cache is is an ammo can hidden at base of fallen tree 50 feet or so south of this formation under leaf litter. Look for the concrete and rocks piled on top of the root ball of the fallen tree. The cache is under a chunk of asphalt between the root ball and the tree trunk.
Happy Hunting!!
