Thomas Raw was suposedly the last Mosstrooper, For centuries these outlaws ,also known as Reivers plundered the English/ Scottish border's area. What they could not steal and carry off, they burnt. Thomas Raw had his base
just over the Northumberland border at a farmstead called Wharmley burn, in Co. Durham Just across the River Derwent from Allensford, he was one of the few that evaded capture and prosecution, when he died at Wharmley burn he could not be buried in consercrated ground because of his disbelief in christianity , so he was laid to rest under a flat tomb stone at his favourite vantage point, which was a small Waterfall on the Wharmly burn just as the burn meets the river Derwent, these small falls are only a few hundred yards from a cache hidden by Travers,
in 1836 a fellow named John Emmerson removed the head stone to his farm at Steeley , a few miles to the southeast , near the village of Satley, he had the stone hoisted up and built into the side of his barn, where it can be seen today, Thomas Raw who had been a big man in both girth and height had a nastly temper and was a cruel sort who showed no mercy to his victims, he was hated by everyone who had come across him, The Present Farmers wife gave me a lot of history on Thomas Raw and also John Emmerson, She went on to say that the present farm had once been the old village of Satley , it stands 1/2 a mile north west of the present village.
To claim a find log You need to email with THE DAY AND THE MONTH OF THOMAS RAW'S DEATH this will be found on the tomb stone. He doesn't appear on any web pages nor does he appear in the church records, There is a public footpath that goes through the farm but it turns left just before the barn,
you can wander over the farmyard to the barn , But please go no futher than the barn, When I was speaking to the farmers wife She got to thinking that Bus loads would be coming to see this cache, But I assured her that the type of people that would come through Geocaching are a well behaved lot and will not wander about her farm, You can't park at the farm entrance as its very narrow and they come in and out with long trailers. I parked just up the lane at
N 54 47.274
W 001 49.214 on the grass verge
You will hear and see a yappy Jack Russel , but its just barking to let the farmer know someones about.
you can continue on the public footpath for a circular walk.
