Tel Shikmona (Tell as-Samak or Sycamine), is an ancient Phoenician settlement situated near the seacoast in the modern city of Haifa.
Tel Shikmona was place where ships could be brought to harbor, and where people could come to shore and travel through the Holy Land.
The remains on the settlement date from the Late Bronze Age to the Late Byzantine period. The lower city is dated to the Late Roman period-Byzantine period. No remains have been found dating to the Early Arab period, leading the archaeologists to conclude that Tel Shikmona was abandoned before the 7th century CE.
In the site there are many beautiful mosaic floors but most of the site is in ruins, but it gives a good idea of what it used to look like.
The excavations are just above the scenic seashore just north of Hecht Park, making them accessible by paved walkways. On the north side of the site can be find the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Center (Limnological is the study of inland waters).
