Geocache Description:

Holdenhurst Parish Hall caters for private functions. It is situated along a rural lane on the outskirts of Holdenhurst Village. The age of the building does not seem to be noted on the web. But when we spoke with a gentleman locking the gates he stated that the three flat roofed extensions were part of the original building and not later additions. Outside the gate there is one of the original gas street lamps of the area.

Holdenhurst Village, noted in the Doomsday Book of 1068,is a small isolated village in the N.E. suburbs of Bournemouth. Isolated since the building of the Bournemouth Spur Road in the 1960’s, it since has no “through route” by car. So only accessed from Muscliffe,or Throop by car. But still accessible by foot/cycle from Coooper Dean roundabout or foot/cycle along Riverside Avenue via the bridge over the A338/Spur Rd.
Holdenhurst Village is quoted as the “Mother of Bournemouth” but prior to being absorbed into the new Parish of Bournemouth in 1894 the “Parish of Holdenhurst” stretched from Christchurch in the east to Poole in the west. Or was it in the “Parish of Christchurch” that stretched that far?(we found it a complicated read) Also there was “Liberty of Westover” (Westover Liberty) that we failed to get to grips with re- the history of Holdenhurst village.
