This season each event is part of an alpha series of titles highlighting a term used in Geocaching. Today’s event is brought to you by the letter "M". The Geocaching Glossary has several M words including Mega-Event, Micro, Multi-Cache, and Mystery Cache as well as Muggle and Muggled. I could also call this event "M - Mom's Birthday" because it is but I'll stick with Muggle.
So who is Mr. Muggle? And why not "Mrs Muggle" or "Ms Muggle"? Well, that's a long story and involves a certain local geocacher whose name must not be mentioned, but anyone who has seen the movies or read the books knows that the author J. K. Rowling used the term to mean 'a person without magical powers'. But the term "muggle" was first used in the 13th century. Though its origin is unknown, the Oxford English Dictionary says it could be a Kentish word meaning tail. That makes a "muggling" someone with a tail. We will say a muggle is simply a person who is not a geocacher and leave off the magic part, even though some very talented geocachers seem to have "magical powers". So we'll just say our Mr. Muggle is a non geocacher and if Mr. Muggle should accidentally find a geocache or, even worse, throw it away, we say the cache has been "muggled". Of course we encourage muggles of all kinds to "find" this Event Cache and join us!  Who knows? You might even discover the magical power is strong within you!
