Geocache Description:

Bethpage Fireman's Memorial Park

A local aircraft manufacturer donated an 18-acre site to Oyster Bay Township for the construction of a community park and swimming pool complex in Bethpage. The park was dedicated on May 22, 1965, but was forced to close in 2002 due to contaminated land. The pool was reopened in 2003 and the playground for the children was reopened in the fall of 2003. December 13, 2008 was the grand opening of the Town of Oyster Bay, state of the art, Ice Skating Center at the Community Park which is enjoyed by hockey players, figure skaters and recreational skaters.  Oyster Bay Skatepark opened in 2012, and features both street and transition elements, plus three connected bowls.

Still, the ball fields and picnic areas remain closed till those areas are clean of contaminates.

A: Bethpage was named Central Park until 1936.  The Central Park Honor Roll monument lists veterans of WWI. Those names with stars were killed in the line of duty.  Interestingly, this park's property was once a farm previously owned by Henry & Louisa Leslie in the 1800's, and their three sons, Sydney, Walter, and Milton all survived the war and are on this plaque.  The monument used to be in front of the Powell Avenue School, now the site of the Bethpage Library.  How many columns of names on this plaque?

B: There's a plaque presented by the Bethpage HS Band.  How many names are listed?

C: The stone monument honors Bethpage firemen who gave their lives in service to the community.  How many names are listed?

D: A plaque begins, "For God And Country."  What is the value of the Roman numeral on this plaque?

E: How many letters in the first word of the Korean War plaque?

F: Polygnotos Vagis was the sculptor of the granite memorial honoring World War II veterans.  Carved from local black granite mined in Locust Valley, Vagis chose models from young people of Bethpage who were serving in different divisions of the military. How many human faces appear on the sculpture?

X: The seal of the Town of Oyster Bay is mounted on the wall behind the memorial.  The stylized seagull was created by Oyster Bay artist Alfred J. Walker who graduated from Oyster Bay High School and went on to become an artist with the Walt Disney Studios. The date comes from the first purchase of land by Samuel Mayo, William Leverich and Peter Wright from the Matinecock sachem Mohannes, though this was not the first European settlement at Oyster Bay.   What is the second digit of the year on the seal?

Y: Look again at the town seal. How many seagulls are on the seal?

Z: How many letters in the last word of the Vietnam War plaque?
