Il cosiddetto Palazzo dei Diavoli è un'antica abitazione in pietra posta al civico 30 dell'omonima via a Firenze, nei pressi dell'Isolotto. A causa del suo aspetto austero e spartano, i contadini della zona fantasticarono superstizioni e leggende, da cui poi è derivato il nome.
Tutt'oggi alcune dicerie locali tramandano che il Palazzo dei Diavoli sia stata la residenza del noto pittore fiorentino Agnolo di Cosimo di Mariano, meglio conosciuto come il Bronzino.
Anche se a livello storico-architettonico non è stato approfondito, dai caratteri della struttura e delle aperture (porte e finestre) probabilmente si tratta di una casa torre duecentesca costruita in arenaria, poi "appalagiata" nel trecento, ovvero sono state addossate alla torre originaria altre strutture abitative.
L'antico "fortilizio" due-trecentesco, è appartenuto dal 1427 fino alla fine del XVI alla famiglia fiorentina degli Alberti, successivamente al catasto ottocentesco la proprietà risulta passata alla famiglia Franceschi risultando come casa colonica con orto e bindolo con annessi terreni "lavorativi". Potrebbe quindi essere stata una seconda residenza di queste famiglie che possedendo terre in aree suburbane, la utilizzavano per villeggiare e per controllare i mezzadri.
La cupezza della struttura dette adito alla nascita di leggende e superstizioni popolari, che gli valsero appunto il nome che oggi si trova a portare.
Si dice che al suo interno si riunissero le streghe, o abitato da oscure presenze. La costruzione del palazzo per mancanza di decori, pare terminato in fretta, per questo si tramandò la leggenda che fosse stato il diavolo a terminare in una notte il palazzo, pretendendo in cambio l’anima del proprietario.
Altra ipotesi sul nome arriva dall'appartenenza dell’edificio alla famiglia degli Alberti, fino alla fine del XVI secolo. Ora, poiché gli Alberti appartenevano ai Ghibellini, venivano considerati come “diavoli”, e questa potrebbe essere la reale ragione del nome del Palazzo.
Esiste anche una terza ipotesi, forse la più attendibile: la strada, nel suo tratto finale, presenta una biforcazione, che obbliga a scegliere quale strada prendere, proprio come farebbe un diavolo.

The so-called Palazzo dei Diavoli is an ancient stone house located at number 30 of the street of the same name in Florence, near the Isolotto. Because of its austere and spartan appearance, the farmers of the area fantasized about superstitions and legends, from which the name then derives.
Some local rumors still hold that the Palazzo dei Diavoli was the residence of the well-known Florentine painter Agnolo di Cosimo di Mariano, better known as Bronzino.
Even if it has not been investigated at a historical-architectural level, from the characteristics of the structure and the openings (doors and windows) it is probably a thirteenth-century tower house built in sandstone, then "appalagiata" in the fourteenth century, i.e. they were placed against the original tower other housing facilities.
The ancient thirteenth-fourteenth-century "fort" belonged from 1427 until the end of the sixteenth to the Alberti Florentine family, after the nineteenth-century land registry the property passed to the Franceschi family resulting as a farmhouse with vegetable garden and bindolo with annexed "working" land . It could therefore have been a second residence of these families who, owning land in suburban areas, used it for holidays and to control sharecroppers.
The gloom of the structure gave rise to popular legends and superstitions, which earned it the name it bears today.
It is said that witches met inside it, or that it was inhabited by dark presences. The construction of the building due to lack of decorations, seems to have finished quickly, for this reason the legend was handed down that it was the devil who finished the building in one night, demanding the soul of the owner in exchange.
Another hypothesis on the name comes from the building belonging to the Alberti family until the end of the 16th century. Now, since the Albertis belonged to the Ghibellines, they were considered "devils", and this could be the real reason for the name of the Palace.
There is also a third hypothesis, perhaps the most reliable: the road, in its final stretch, has a fork, which forces you to choose which road to take, just like a devil would.
