Before we can talk about O.C.B., we need to talk about the Original GPS Stash #1: GCF https://coord.info/GCFcoord.info/GCF

  • May 1, 2000, President Bill Clinton
    • Ended GPS scrambling (Selective Availability: SA)
    • SA would be turned off at midnight.
  • May 3, 2000, Dave Ulmer hid the First Stash near Portland, OR, USA
    • Black 5 Gallon Bucket with:
    • Delorme Topo USA software, videos, books, food, money, and a slingshot
    • Rule: Take Something…Leave Something
  • Geocaching was born!
    • The name “Stash” gave the wrong idea of what was hidden
    • “Geo” from Greek for “Earth”
    • “Cache” from 18th Century term for temporary hiding place
  • 2003, Geocacher named Team360, raised money for a plaque to commemorate the “First Stash” original location
    • Plaque Installed in presence of Dave Ulmer and some other Geocachers
    • A new Cache with Logbook placed nearby as the Original bucket was damaged by a mower – be sure to sign the logbook when visiting the plaque cache: https://coord.info/GCGV0P
    • Remains of the Original Can of Beans was unearthed at the site
    • Video of discovery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMHZcgM11GU
    • Damaged from being partially buried and exposed to the weather of the Portland area for several years, the can was very carefully straightened out and thoroughly cleaned, then treated with several coats of rust stopper/converter and u.v.-resistant polyurethane.
    • Sept. 7, 2003 the OCB TB was released to travel world-wide with Team360 to events: https://coord.info/TBGJAA
    • During attendance at Events, it was in a clear display case for all geocachers to enjoy.
    • O.C.B. has now been retired from traveling - There are no 'Virtual Finds' allowed on the O.C.B.
