2022. gadā apritēja 180 gadi kopš Mērsraga kanāla izveidošanas./ 2022 marked 180 years since the creation of the Mērsrags Canal.
1842.gadā no visām apkārtējām muižām sanāca zemnieki, lai Engures ezera ūdeņiem pavērtu jaunu ceļu uz jūru. Rakts no ezera ziemeļaustrumu stūra uz jūru pie “Kuģenieku” mājām Mērsragā. Kanāls izrakts, lai pazeminātu ezera līmeni un iegūtu plašākas pļavas ezermalā. / In 1842, farmers from all the surrounding estates came together to open a new path for the waters of Lake Engure to the sea. A canal was dug from the northeast corner of the lake to the sea near the “Kuģenieki” houses in Mērsrags. The canal was dug to lower the lake level and create more spacious meadows on the lakeshore.
Stāstos par pirmreizējo Mērsraga kanāla rakšanu minēts arī, ka pie “Kuģenieku” mājām atrasti vairāki lieli dzintara gabali, kas pārdoti muižas īpašniekam. Dzintars atrasts esot arī mežā, un pēc laika sākušās teju dzintara medības mūsu pusē. / Stories about the first excavation of the Mērsrags Canal also mention that several large pieces of amber were found near the "Kuģenieki" house, which were sold to the owner of the manor. Amber was also found in the forest, and after some time, amber hunting began on our side.
Kanāls padziļināts 1900.gadā, tā kopējais garums līdz pat mūsdienām ir aptuveni 4 km. Ezera līmenis, līdz ar kanāla izrakšanu, pazeminājies par 1,5m. / The canal was deepened in 1900, and its total length to this day is approximately 4 km. The lake level has dropped by 1.5 m since the canal was dug.
1917./1918.gadā vācu okupācijas karaspēks aizbēris kanāla izteku pie ezera, lai paceltu ezera līmeni, kur toreiz bija domāta hidroplānu stacija, taču jau 1918.gada rudenī plūdi aizsprostojumu izrāva. / In 1917/1918, German occupation troops filled in the canal's outlet at the lake to raise the lake level, where a seaplane station was then intended, but floods broke the dam in the fall of 1918.
1938.gadā tieši Mērsraga kanāla krastmalā svinēti grandiozi sadziedāšanās svētki – Ziemeļkurzemes dziesmu svētki. Arī uz šiem Dziesmu svētkiem Mērsragā, neskatoties uz lietaino dienu, bija ieradušies ap 450 dziedātāju no 19 apkārtnes koriem un tuvu pie 2000 apmeklētāju. / In 1938, a grandiose singing festival – the North Kurzeme Song Festival – was celebrated right on the Mērsrags Canal embankment. Despite the rainy day, around 450 singers from 19 local choirs and close to 2,000 visitors came to this Song Festival in Mērsrags.
Līdz ar zvejnieku kolhoza “1.Maijs” attīstību kanālmalā izaudzis arī stadions, kas pulcēja pat tūkstošiem cilvēku Zvejnieksvētkos. / Along with the development of the fishing collective farm "1.May", a stadium has also grown on the canal bank, which has gathered thousands of people during Fishermen's Day.
Neptūns tolaik ieradās ar savu svītu laivā, pa kanālu. / Neptune arrived at that time with his retinue in a boat, along the canal.

Kanāla malā – ugunsdzēsēju sacensības, un ir, kas vēl atceras laikus, kad ap kanālmalas un tautas nama priedēm tinušies zvejas tīkli, ko čaklās mērsradznieču rokas veikli lāpījušas. Līdz sešdesmito gadu sākumam gar kanālmalu līgani kustējies, dūmu mutuļu un svilpes pavadībā arī mazbānītis. / There are firefighter competitions on the canal bank, and there are those who still remember the times when fishing nets were wrapped around the pine trees on the canal bank and in the community center, skillfully mended by the hardworking hands of the mayor's relatives. Until the early sixties, a small boat also moved smoothly along the canal bank, accompanied by puffs of smoke and whistles.
Lai gan makšķerēšana kanālā bija populāra, un tikusi pat aprakstīta makšķernieku žurnālos jau trīsdesmitajos gados, no 1969.gada Mērsraga – Engures kanālā varēja makšķerēt tikai tad, ja bija zivju aizsardzības iestādes izdota atļauja, un jau tolaik kanāla makšķernieki tika pārbaudīti. Savukārt, makšķerēšana kanālā par maksu, ieviesta deviņdesmitajos gados. / Although fishing in the canal was popular, and was even described in fishing magazines as early as the 1930s, from 1969, fishing in the Mērsrags-Engure canal was only possible with a permit issued by the fish protection authority, and even then, fishermen on the canal were checked. In turn, fishing in the canal for a fee was introduced in the 1990s.
Deviņdesmito gadu beigās kanālmalā kā goda sardzē stāvējis arī mūsu zvejnieks – Oskars, kas mūsdienās apskatāms pašā Mērsraga centrā. / In the late 1990s, our fisherman Oskars, who can be seen today in the very center of Mērsrags, also stood as a guard of honor on the canal bank.
2000.gada septembrī pāri Mērsraga kanālam uzbūvēts gājēju tilts – trosu tilts, kas atjaunots 2014.gadā. To esam iesaukuši par zaļo jeb Šūpojošo tiltiņu. / In September 2000, a pedestrian bridge was built across the Mērsrags Canal – a cable-stayed bridge, which was renovated in 2014. We have nicknamed it the Green or Swinging Bridge.

Lieliska vieta drona lidināšanai, lai no augšas vērotu ezerā izrakto kanālu ornamentus. Ezeram un kanālam pieguļošais mežs ir privātīpašums, tādēļ tajā nekādas darbības nav atļauts veikt.
