Bardsey Island lies about 2 miles across Bardsey Sound at the end of the Llyn Peninsula. The Island is 1.5 miles long and, at its widest point, 1/2 a mile across. The island rises to a height of 167 meters and the whole island has a surface area of 180 hectacres, most of which is farmland.
It became a focal point for the Celtic Christian Church, attracting devout monks, and it is believed that St Cadfan began building a monastery on the island in the sixth century.
The Abbey ruins that are seen here today are that of the thirteenth century Augustinian Abbey of St. Mary’s. It was in use until the dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537 after which Bardsey was left to the pirates and marauders until the establishment of a farming and fishing community in the mid-eighteenth century. The well-known reference to the island as the burial place of twenty thousand ‘saints’ dates from the early middle ages, when three pilgrimages to Bardsey were said to equal one to Rome.
The island has wide range of wildlife and is home to a large colony of seals, dolphins and porpoises can also be seen in the surrounding waters.
How to get there: Getting to Bardsey is not easy, there is some very tricky currents to navigate but if you own your own boat and have the relevant skills it is not impossible. We will be travelling on the 11.30 ferry service from Porth Meudwy.

Yr adfeilion sydd i weld yna heddiw yw abaty Awstinaidd y Santes Fair, a adeiladwyd ar yr ynys yn y drydedd ganrif ar ddeg Defnyddiwyd y mynachdy hyd gyfnod Diddymu’r Mynachlogydd ym 1537. Wedi hyn gadawyd Enlli i’r morladron nes sefydlu cymuned o amaethwyr a physgotwyr yng nghanol y ddeunawfed ganrif. Mae’r cyfeiriad adnabyddus at yr ynys fel man claddu ugain mil o saint yn dyddio o ddyddiau cynnar y canol oesoedd, a dywedid bryd hynny bod tair pererindod i Enlli gyfwerth ag un bererindod i Rufain.
Mae’r ynys yn gartref i amryw o fywyd gwyllt, ac yn gartref i nifer fawr o forloi,, dolffiniaid a llamhidyddion yn aml i’w weld yn y môr o gwmpas yr ynys.
