| La costruzione che si erge sulla sommità del colle fu eretta agli inizi del '700 dai conti di Polcenigo sulle rovine di antichi edifici risalenti al medioevo. L'elegante e lussuoso palazzo, noto come "Il Castello", fu molto probabilmente progettato dall'architetto veneziano Matteo Lucchesi. Una grandiosa e scenografica gradinata di 360 (o 365) scalini collegava l'edificio con la sottostante via Coltura, mentre da via San Giacomo si saliva lungo un ripido sentiero lastricato. |
The building on top of the hill was erected in the early 1700s by the Counts of Polcenigo on the ruins of ancient medieval buildings. The elegant luxurious palace, known as "The Castle", was probably designed by Matteo Lucchesi, a well-known Venetian architect of the time. A grand flight of about 360 (or 365) stairs connected the building with via Coltura and a steep paved path, departing from via San Giacomo, led straight uphill, to the north-western part of the castle.

| Il nuovo castello (così fu sempre chiamato, nonostante l'aspetto di palazzo signorile) rimase però disabitato dalla metà dell'800 per controversie ereditarie tra i conti. Crollarono così progressivamente il tetto e i pavimenti, anche a causa dei sismi del 1936 e del a976, e furono venduti o asportati arredi, opere d'arte e parti lapidee. Alla fine degli anni Settanta le mura perimetrali dell'edificio furono consolidate per rendere l'area più sicura. |
However, the new castle (as it was always called, despite the appearance of a noble palace) remained uninhabited from the mid-1800s due to hereditary disputes between the counts. Thus the roof and floors progressively collapsed, also due to the earthquakes of 1936 and 1976, and furnishings, works of art and stone parts were sold or removed. In the late 1970s the perimeter walls of the building were consolidated to make the area safer. |
