El Prometeo Quetzalcóatl

Uno de los lugares más reconocibles y concurridos en la Facultad de Ciencias de la UNAM es la explanada de Prometeo, la cual en su centro esta decorada con la escultura "El Prometeo Quetzalcóatl ". Este monumento existe desde los inicios de Ciudad Universitaria (~1960), el cual sigue decorando esta facultad desde entonces.
El autor de esta fuente, Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, decidió fusionar dos mitos en esta obra de arte. El primero es el de Prometeo, el titán amigo de los mortales. Es muy conocido por haber robado el fuego del Olimpo, mismo que se lo entregó a la humanidad. El conocimiento científico ha sido asimilado con el fuego por su acción civilizadora que tuvo en nuestros antepasados. Por esto es que Prometeo ha sido asociado rápidamente como una figura científica. Por otro lado, Quetzalcóatl es otra figura benefactora de la humanidad. En la mitología prehispánica él roba los huesos que Mictlantecuhtli guardaba en el inframundo y con ellos crea a los humanos. A esta deidad es que los humanos deben sus conocimientos más necesarios, tales como los de la agricultura.
Al visitar este cache podrás apreciar esta obra que engloba ambos mitos, haciendo referencia al conocimiento científico que se enseña día a día en las aulas de la Facultad de Ciencias de la UNAM. Desgraciadamente es raro ver la fuente prendida, pero cuando lo hace es una vista majestuosa que decora la explanada frente a la biblioteca. ¡Las fotografías de este monumento son bienvenidas en tu registro!
Consideraciones:
- La dificultad radica en que esta es una zona con muchos muggles. Se precavido al tomar y regresar el contenedor.
- La Facultad de Ciencias esta abierta en un horario de 7:00 - 21:00 de lunes a viernes, y de 7:00 - 14:30 los sábados. En periodos vacacionales se encuentra cerrado.
The Prometheus Quetzalcóatl
One of the most recognizable and concurred places in the Science's Faculty of UNAM is the Prometheus esplanade, which in it's center is decorated by "El Prometeo Quetzalcóatl " (The Prometheus Quetzalcóatl) sculpture. This monument exists since the begining of UNAM's University City (~1960), which has continued to decorate this faculty since then.
The author of this fountain, Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, decided to fuze two miths in this artwork. The first one is the one about Prometheus, the titan friend of the mortals. It's mostly known for stealing the fire of the Olympus, later giving it to humanity. The scientific knowledge has been asimilated with said fire due to it's civilizing action that it had in our ancestors. Because of this Prometheus has been rapidly associated with a scientific figure. On the other hand, Quetzalcóatl is anothe benefactor for human kind. In prehispanic mythology he steals the bones guarded by Mictlantecuhtli in the underworld, and with them he creates mankind. Humanity owns this deity it's most necessary knowledges, such as the ones needed for agriculture.
When visiting this cache you'll be able to appreciate this work that encircles both myths, which in return make reference to the scientific knowledge that's thaught every day in the classrooms of the Science Faculty of UNAM. Unfortunately it's rare to see the fountain on, but when it is, it's a sight to behold. Photos of this monument are very welcome on the logs!

- The cache's difficulty lies in the fact that this is a high muggle area. Be careful when grabing and returning the container.
- The Science Faculty is open Monday-Friday from 7:00 - 21:00 and Saturdays from 7:00 - 14:30. The faculty is closed during vacations.
