The Queen's Cache - A Royal Cypher Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

SouthernGrits: From the nearby gravel parking area, new NO TRESSPASSING/PRIVATE PROPERTY signs have been installed. Not knowing the new owners or plans for this land, I chose to pull and archive. I will find a new location for this container......hopefully soon. These are very cool walking paths around in here though, hopefully the new owners will allow walkers to continue using them.

Geocache Description:

The longest reigning Queen:

Queen Elizabeth II

Where

UNITED KINGDOM ()

When

08 SEPTEMBER 2022

The longest-reigning queen ever is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (UK, b. 21 April 1926), who succeeded to the throne on 6 February 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI. As of her death on 8 September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II had reigned without interruption for 70 years 214 days.

Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne at the age of 25 years 291 days, and passed at the age of 96 years 140 days.

The queen wore BRIGHTLY colored outfits when in public so that she could stand out in a crowd. In addition, she would always wear a hat of some sort due to the aged traditional standard that women should not allow their hair to be visible. During her lifetime, she had more than 200 official photographs taken, the first being at seven years of age!

In a 1957 Christmas Broadcast, the Queen promised the United Kingdom she would give her “heart” and “devotion” to the Commonwealth. “I cannot lead you into battle,” she said at the time. “I do not give you laws or administer justice, but I can do something else: I can give my heart and my devotion to these old islands and to all the peoples of our brotherhood of nations.”

Royal mail post boxes in the United Kingdom pay tribute to the ruling monarch at the time of installation.  This is accomplished through the use of the monarch's initials on the front of the post box. Over the course of her 70 year reign, you can imagine that there are probably hundreds (if not thousands) of these post boxes with Queen Elizabeth II's initials on them.

The letters are called the “Royal Cypher” and they give any eagle-eyed onlookers a subtle clue as to when the post box was erected.

The letters indicate which King or Queen was the monarch at the time when the post box was installed - that could have been hundreds of years ago, or more recently.

If you find a postbox that has the letters “ER” on then you can usually tell it is from within the past 70 years.

The Queen took to the throne in 1952 so any new post boxes will have been installed with these initials.

They stand for Elizabeth, Regina which was the late monarch’s name as well as the word “Queen” in Latin.

But not all post boxes have those two letters on.

Similarly, you can tell that a “GR” post box was put up during the era of King George.

The G stands for George, and the R stands for Rex, which is King in Latin.

So if the post box in your village sports these letters you know that it’s been standing proudly since before the 1950s.

If there are no more letters around the GR, then it’s likely from the period of King George V, and if it’s from the era of King George VI you may notice a little “VI” next to the GR.

The “ER” can also refer to King Edward too, but an “II” next to the letters will tell you it’s referring to the Queen while a “VII” or “VIII” will refer to either of the kings.
