Variously translated as 'Joy', 'Happy' and 'Pleasant ', the 愉悦 (yuyue) in the name of the company on the other side of the forbidding wall holds out a tantalizing promise. It turns out though to be a misnomer and a throwback to the lower end industrial past - metal repairs in this case - Nangang is quickly leaving behind. It doesn't seem to have occurred to the older established businesses along the blueway to knock holes in their glass-topped walls and create access points for their workers to the blueway. As a result, for now there are lots of sections of lifeless, opaque and impervious walls fronting the blueway.
Newer developments moving in along the blueways, generally higher up the value chain and more conscious of the benefits of healthy and happy employees, have a much better understanding of the appeal and joy of bike lanes and walkways along waterways and are providing linkages to the blueways. Blueway access is built into the design of the better and more enlightened new developments and is part of their market appeal. In time, those older businesses which still remain will probably also start to add access points, if not for the public then at least for their workers.
