The Virtual Fence

Every year in Australia, and particularly Tasmania, there are many thousands of accidents involving wildlife and vehicles, resulting in wildlife deaths and injuries, injuries and loss of life to people, and damage to vehicles and property.
Virtual Fencing is an active electronic protection system that alerts animals before crossing the road when a vehicle is approaching between dusk to dawn.
The Virtual Fencing device is activated by approaching headlights, which causes it to emit a combination of sound and flashing light stimuli that alert animals and in turn reduces the startling effect.
The devices are placed at 25-metre intervals on alternating sides of the road. They are triggered in sequence by the vehicle headlight as a car approaches along the road, forming a virtual fence.
The 7km virtual fence between Murdunna and Dunalley was erected in March 2016 and designed to protect Tasmanian devils, wombats, wallabies and all native fauna. Having driven along this road many times over those years, it is certainly our observation that the amount of "road kill" on this section is substantially reduced. What a pity the virtual fence can't be placed along all rural roads!
This is a simple drive-by. There is very good parking on the southbound side of the road, and preferably should be attempted from this side of the road.
