Afghan War Memorial To Sons of Motherland is a park and a memorial dedicated to the Soviet soldiers from Moldova who lost their lives in the Afghanistan War, a war that lasted 9 1/2 years. This war is also referred to as the Soviet Union's Vietnam War or the Silent Bear. The similarities between the Soviet Afghan War and America's Vietnam War are almost identical. Both Soviet Union (9 1/2 years) and the USA (8 years) lost wars that they believed they would win in only a few months; but were severely defeated. Both the Soviet Union and USA retreated and evacuated Afghanistan and Vietnam. Both wars were political. This is considered one of the leading causes of the fall of the Soviet Union.
The monument commemorates Chişinău’s fallen youth during the Afghan war between 1979 and 1989 - mostly boys of my vintage who never saw their 21st birthdays. Smallish, simple but poignant memorial.
