The Shanghai Sanyou Industrial Towel Factory, the earliest towel factory in China, was founded in 1912 by Chen Wan Yun, Shen Jiucheng and Shen Qiyong. Sanyou(Chinese: 三友) means three friends in Chinese.
In 1917, Sanyou Industrial purchased 30 acres of land in Yangshupu Yixiang Port and planned to build a larger towel factory to compete with the Japanese Donghua Towel Factory. After the board of directors' discussion, the towel was named "Triangle(三角)", and the design was made up of a circle with an inner triangle, signifying that the three of them were sharing the hardships and suffering together. The trademark "Triangle" was also registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce in Beijing. In 1919, the towel factory set up a factory in Chuansha and purchased more than 100 sets of wooden machines.
Triangle brand towels sold well throughout the country, making the Japanese "Iron Anchor" brand towels business increasingly decline. The Japanese merchants were not willing to fail and used the cheap policy to compete for the market again. 200 sets of single width towel iron machines were brought in and the Ruihe Towel Factory was set up between Gaolang Bridge and Lanzhou Road on Huade Road to mass produce "Iron Anchor" towels with cheap labour.
Sanyou Industrial, on the other hand, improved product quality and reduced costs. In the climax of the promotion of national products and the boycott of Japanese products, the "love of national products" was deeply rooted in people's hearts. In less than three years, the Japanese towel factory was forced out of business due to the limited sales of Japanese towels, and in 1923, the Japanese brand towels were completely withdrawn from the Chinese market.
Soon afterwards, the Sanyou Industrial bought the Hangzhou Tongyizhong Yarn Factory and the Dingxin Weaving Factory and turned them into the Hangzhou branch of the Sanyou. At the 1926 World's Fair in Philadelphia, USA, the Sanyou Towel was awarded the "C Gold Medal (Textile Category)".
