Geocache Description:

Delaware State Parks Approved Geocache logo

This regular geocache (ammo can) is hidden just off the Cross Country Course at Killens Pond State Park.  As the name implies, the Cross Country Course is a 5K course used by the local high school and others.  It starts and ends at the Sports Complex on the north part of the park, which is accessible from the Killens Pond Road entrance.  However, as the name of the cache implies, a 5K is not required when the campground entrance on Paradise Alley Road is open.  There is visitor overflow parking available at the listed coordinates--a short walk from the cache site.  The cache is rather close to the cabin area, so please use stealth.

A first-to-find collectible, trackable geocoin is available for the FTF cacher.  Feel free to hold onto the FTF geocoin--or you can move it along if you'd like.

About Killens Pond State Park (from Delaware State Parks)

Named for its centerpiece, the 66-acre Killens Pond, this state park features a waterpark, various watercraft rentals and the popular Pondside Loop Trail. The Lenape people once lived here, and the pond was created when the Murderkill River was dammed to power grist and sawmills. It is now home to a variety of fish, including bass, crappie and sunfish. The new state-of-the art elevated boardwalk allows pedestrians and bikers a safe passage along Killens Pond Road while benches and bump outs allow for wildlife watching and fishing. Kayakers and boaters can launch from the boat launch at the far end of the walkway. The waterpark features four tall slides, a main pool and baby pool, and a tot lot. The campground provides a reprieve in the woods and Delaware’s State tree, the American Holly, is plentiful. Visitors to the park’s nature center can see live animal exhibits that feature native reptiles and amphibians. The Pileated Woodpecker, Prothonotary Warbler and Barred Owl can often be heard in the woods at the park.

Accessing Killens Pond State Park

Killens Pond State Park is open year-round from 8:00 am to sunset every day.  This is not a night cache.  Park office, nature center, water park, and boat rental hours are available here.  From March 1 to November 30, an entrance fee is charged.  These range from $4 daily per vehicle (in-state) to $8 daily per vehicle (out-of-state).  Annual passes are available for purchase online or at the park office.

While deer hunting is permitted in season from designated pins in the western part of the park, they are not particularly close to the cache or the Cross Country Course.  Nevertheless, be aware of hunting season and use caution, especially if venturing farther west in the park.
